MP Gillian Keegan Visits On-site Construction Skills Academy

Vistry Partnerships, Train4All Construction & Engineering Academy staff and students were excited to welcome Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Apprenticeships and Skills Gillian Keegan to the Partnerships site in Alphington, Exeter recently.

During the visit, Minister Keegan received a tour of the new Skills Academy that has been commissioned by Vistry Partnerships and Train4All. The Academy offers training to learners on Technical Boot Camps, Traineeships, Apprenticeships and licenced to practice programmes. Minister Keegan spoke with students about their experiences on the Level 3 Skills Funded courses, Traineeship and Apprenticeship programmes during her visit. The Minister was also shown examples of the learners work under the guidance of Vocational Skills Tutors from Train4All. Learners carry out construction education prior to applying these newly gained skills directly on site.

The Minster said “It was great to hear first-hand how learners of all ages are using our technical skills bootcamps to help them into new careers or gain the skills and confidence they need to re-enter the workplace. Skills bootcamps are unique, giving people the chance to upskill or retrain for free over a short period of time, with a clear line of sight to a job at the end. I look forward to hearing how all those taking part in the bootcamps progress and would encourage anyone in the area looking for a new opportunity to find out more”.

Jon Allen, CEO of Train4All Construction & Engineering Academy said “We are excited to be able to welcome our learners back on-site and to meet with the Minister today sharing the great learning experiences. This past 12 months has been a challenging time for us all, learners need to be developing their practical skills and progressing, the Level 3 Brick Bootcamp has allowed us to do that, we are supporting not only the learner but assisting our employers in retaining their valuable staff. There is so much opportunity for people to gain employment within construction at this time, the Academies both here in Exeter and at Plymouth are positioned to help”.

Level 3 Bricklaying Bootcamp Learner Jack Margowotto from Pearce Construction said “I really want to gain recognition in my field and gain my Gold CSCS card, this programme offers me a great opportunity to progress my career and earn more money. I am really happy to be involved in the bootcamp and thank everyone for the opportunity.”

Bradley Davison, Managing Director of Vistry Partnerships South West and Charlotte Olver Divisional Development & Communities Manager at Vistry Partnerships talked to the Minister about the Academy and why it is important to have such a valuable training hub on their sites.

“We are passionate about creating sustainable communities as well as addressing the industry skills shortage and our Community & Skills Academy Hubs are the ideal platform to do so. We are investing heavily in employment and training and we are excited to launch our newest Skills Academy in partnership with Train4All, here in Exeter. Our skills academies support talent, new and old, and introduce keen new applicants into the industry when they are needed most.”

Charlotte Olver Divisional Development & Communities Manager at Vistry Partnerships said “We are committed to encouraging more people into construction, whatever their background and whatever their age. Our industry offers such a wide variety of exciting and rewarding careers and we want more people to have an opportunity to experience them first-hand. Our Skills Academies are equipping people with the introductory skills they need to join the construction industry, and I am incredibly proud of the work we have done already to get over 500 starters enrolled on one of our programmes. Working in collaboration with Train4All is key to enable that these learners have the best quality of training and live site experience”.
